One of the most common questions we get at Berber Surf Camp is: “When is the best time to visit?”
The honest answer? Always.
Morocco is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year and a coastline that picks up swell from the North Atlantic almost non-stop. However, the waves do change with the seasons. Depending on whether you are looking to catch your very first wave or hunt for heavy barrels, picking the right month can make your trip unforgettable.
Here is our ultimate guide to the surf seasons in Tamraght and Taghazout.
1. Winter (October to April): The World-Class Season
Best for: Intermediates, Advanced Surfers, and Brave Beginners.
This is the season that put Morocco on the map. During these months, the North Atlantic sends huge swells crashing into our coastline, lighting up famous spots like Anchor Point, Killer Point, and Boilers.
- The Vibe: The atmosphere is electric. Pro surfers from around the world flock here, and the surf culture is in full swing.
- For Beginners: Don’t worry—big swell doesn’t mean you can’t surf! We have many sheltered spots (like Crocodiles and Devil’s Rock) where the waves remain gentle and manageable even when the big points are firing.
- The Weather: Days are warm (20-25°C) and sunny, but you’ll need a 3/2mm wetsuit for the water and a warm hoodie for the crisp evenings.
2. Summer (May to September): The Fun & Sun Season
Best for: Complete Beginners, Longboarders, and Chill Seekers.
Many people think the surf stops in summer, but that is a myth! While the giant swells disappear, they are replaced by consistent, fun, and smaller waves that are absolutely perfect for learning.
- The Vibe: Relaxed and less crowded. You won’t have to fight for waves, making it the ideal environment to build your confidence without stress.
- The Weather: It gets hot! Expect temperatures around 30°C. The water warms up significantly, and you can often surf in a shorty wetsuit or just board shorts on the hottest days.
- Why we love it: It’s the perfect time for our Surf & Yoga Package. Start your day with a sunrise session in calm water and end it stretching out on the mat while the sun sets.
3. The Shoulder Seasons (September/October & April/May)
Best for: Everyone!
If you want the best of both worlds, aim for the shoulder seasons. You get the lingering warmth of summer but the beginning (or end) of the winter swells. It is often less busy than peak winter, giving you plenty of space in the lineup.
So, when should you book?
- Go in Winter if you want to see world-class waves and challenge yourself.
- Go in Summer if you want glorious heat, empty lineups, and a stress-free learning environment.
No matter when you choose to arrive, our local instructors at Berber Surf Camp check the forecast daily. We drive you to the specific spot that is working best for your level on that specific day.
